This report is based on the examination and analysis of measures taken by the Israeli occupation forces in the Gaza Strip during the large-scale operation launched in October 2023. The report will also analyze data and maps issued by the Israeli army, monitor and analyze information from the field, in addition to tracking internal displacement in the Gaza Strip. It will also rely on information issued by official bodies, international organizations, and local institutions operating in Gaza.
The Gaza Strip is a narrow coastal strip covering an area of 365 square kilometers, located between Israel, Egypt, and the Mediterranean Sea. Its population is approximately 2.2 million, making it one of the most densely populated areas in the world. On September 11, 2005, the Israeli army unilaterally withdrew from Gaza. Since then, the Hamas-controlled Strip has experienced periodic large-scale military operations, resulting in tens of thousands of civilian casualties and extensive destruction of infrastructure. On October 7, 2023, Hamas carried out a large-scale military attack against Israeli forces in the Gaza border areas. In response, the Israeli occupation announced a large-scale attack on the Gaza Strip called “Operation Iron Swords.” This attack, the most intense in Gaza’s history, caused nearly two million Palestinians to be displaced from their homes, with hundreds of thousands prevented from returning to their original areas, and movement between northern and southern Gaza severely restricted.
